Working on Vacation
What does "work" even mean?
The 9-5 lifestyle that has been engrained in society for decades has created connotations of dread, misery, and constraint for the word “work.”
But “work,” isn’t a bad thing. Work means producing. Work means progression.
And when you “work” for yourself and are doing something that you want to do, it really means a lifestyle.
I’m headed out for a camping and mountain biking trip on Thursday to celebrate my 26th birthday. I already have 3 meetings scheduled for Thursday afternoon and plan to add a few more today.
How am I going to do those meetings?
I’ve built my business in a way so that all I need to run it successfully is my laptop and phone. I don’t need a desk, an office, any physical papers.
So in this case, I’ll probably pull into a small town, find a local coffee shop, order an iced latte, and spend about an hour in meetings before hopping back on the road.
But to most people the idea of that in inconceivable. I’m supposed to be on vacation - not working.
To me… life is in part “working.” Producing. But definitely not for someone else, slaving at a typical 9-5 job. So there’s no reason not to combine that portion of my life with the other portion, which is experiences.
